How to Save Google Gemini Images (Without Losing Quality)

Google Gemini generates images through Imagen, and the results have gotten genuinely impressive. The problem comes when you try to save them.

Unlike ChatGPT, which at least gives you a clear image you can right-click, Gemini's image display has some quirks that make saving less straightforward than it should be.

The Gemini Saving Problem

The right-click issue. Depending on how Gemini renders the image in your conversation, right-click → "Save Image As" might give you a lower-resolution version, a WebP file when you wanted PNG, or occasionally a blob URL that doesn't save at all.

The format roulette. Gemini serves images in different formats depending on the browser, the image type, and apparently its mood. You might get WebP, PNG, or JPEG, and you don't always get to choose.

The conversation burial. Generate 10 images across a long conversation, and finding specific ones later means scrolling through pages of text. Gemini doesn't have an "images" tab or gallery view for your generated images.

The session problem. Clear your conversation or start a new one, and the previous images become harder to locate. Gemini's history preserves conversations, but navigating back to specific images in long threads is tedious.

Manual Solutions

Method 1: Right-Click and Hope

Right-click the image → "Save Image As." Sometimes this works perfectly and gives you the full resolution. Sometimes it doesn't.

Check the file after saving. If the resolution matches what you expected, great. If it's suspiciously small (say, 512×512 when you asked for something larger), you got the preview version.

Method 2: Open in New Tab

Right-click the image → "Open Image in New Tab." This usually gives you the direct URL to the full-resolution version. Then right-click in the new tab → "Save Image As."

Two extra clicks, but more reliable than direct saving from the conversation.

Method 3: DevTools

For the technically inclined: open Chrome DevTools (F12), go to the Network tab, filter by "image," and regenerate or scroll to the image. The full-resolution version will appear in the network requests. Right-click the request → "Open in new tab" → save.

This is reliable but absurdly over-engineered for "I just want to save a picture."
